3 Things for Calgary asks all Calgarians to:
- Think about 3 Things you can do to make Calgary better. These things could be for your street, your neighbourhood or for the entire city.
- Do those 3 Things.
- Encourage 3 more people to do the same.
If every Calgarian did at least 3 Things for Calgary, we’d have more than 3 million actions making Calgary an even better city. Amazing! The 3 Things you choose are up to you. Large or small, every action we take makes a difference.
From here, you can:
- learn more about our initiative and what inspired us to launch it
- find things that make you stop and think and an inspirational list to which you can add your 3 Things
- find out about upcoming events and promote your own
But first the video that captured our imaginations and inspired us to run with 3 Things for Calgary in the first place…

Hi I am a grade 6 student at Fish Creek school. Our class decided to take part in the 3 things for calgary initative. The three things I did to make calgary a better place is
1) I baked for a neighbor
2) I donated to good will
3) I picked up littler
I felt great making calgary better for everybody. I have kept picking up littler ever since we handed in our pictures of us and our sheet. Our calss made threes and hung them on the roof of our school to shgow that we participated in the initave. I hope that all calgarians can participate in this initavite and make calgary a better place.
To all the wonderful Grade 6 students at Fish Creek School who shared your 3 Things for Calgary with us this week, thank you, thank you, thank you! How wonderful that you not only did good deeds for your neighbours, friends and families but you also shared how good these acts made you feel. Well, it sure makes us feel good to know there are such caring young people in our city. Thank you also for spreading the word about 3 Things with others in your community – great work!
This is a great idea
hi, i did two out of the three things for calgary so far and these are them
1. I worked really hard to make cake pops (cake balls rolled in hardened chocolate and decorated) for my new neighbours at my new house and shared the three things mayors initiative with them.
2. I volunteered twice at my sister’s skating competition. I did it once when i was an ice patcher and after a group or two skated, we would come on the ice with a bucket of slush, a ladle, and a hockey puck and we filled the holes in the ice with the ladle and smoothed it out with the hockey puck. the second time i was a runner and i carried the results from the judges to the people upstairs and they typed them up. both times, i got to have food from the buffet for volunteering. i liked the first time better.
the third thing i am going to do is pick up at the LEAST, ten pieces of trash from either fish creek school park, chaparral lake park, or chaparral school park.
Anaïs, grade 6 student at fish creek school.

I think this idea was wonderful and I hope everybody does it.
I shoveled my neighbors sidewalk and I cleaned the benches at my park and I picked up garbage.

My next three things was that I shoveled my neighbors drive way which felt good because she was an elderly lady and had just got a surgery on her foot. Hi!
I am a student at Fish Creek School, taking part in the 3 Things Initiative. I made 3 Things, and my class even made our own big green 3′s!
Here are my 3 Things:
1) Pick up litter in and around my community when I see it.
2) Donate to the Calgary Humane Society.
3) Walk every where in my community, instead of driving.
I did all these things to make Calgary a better place. I encourage all Calgarians to take part in 3 Things, because it makes Calgary a better place to live in. I felt very proud of myself when I finished my 3 Things. Even doing those small things, it made a big impact on me. It made me feel like I was making Calgary a better, safer, cleaner city. I thing this initiative is very important and was a great idea and is perfect for Calgary. I enjoyed participating in 3 Things, and throughout the rest of my life, I will continue to add to my 3 Things.
I hope you enjoyed reading about the 3 Things I did! Thanks!
My grade six class decided to participate in the 3 things initiative.
My 3 things are:
1. Picking up litter around my community
2. Shovelling my neighbour’s drive way and side walk after it snowed
3. Walking to and from school for 2 weeks to save energy
I was very proud of myself after I did all of my three things. I love helping my community and making it a better place to live. I am very glad that I got to participate in the three things initiative and will keep trying to help the city of Calgary.
Hello my friends
I did my 3 thing and they were to invite some people that I didn’t really know that well and play road hockey or something. My second thing is that I would walk to school instead of drive, so i don’t pollute the air. And last but not least I was going to pick up trash I see on the ground.I think that this was a great idea and as long as people actually do there things.
Hello, I am a Grade 6 Student from Fish Creek School and i did 3 things for calgary.
1. I made cookies for my neighbors that i did not know.
2. I donated to the dibetes fondation.
3. I picked up garbage in the community.
I felt very good my doing these things for calgary and it was a very good idea!
My 3 things for calgary were:
1 do something for our neighbours
2 pick up trash
3 write a letter to a administrator on an issue that we cared about.
Let me tell you to start with, i am in grade 6 in Fish Creek School, and i did all of those. However, the letter that i sent did not come in time, because my mom and dad claimed that the post did not deliver in weekends, plus the additional time meant that it did not come in time. However, i did all of those other ones, and i think i made a bit of a difference, but if there are about 1 000 000 000 people in calgary, those little shovels can move mountains. So, I encourage you to do these 3 things for Calgary, small or big, so we can move mountains and make the city a better place.
-Cole, Fish creek school,
My name is Nathan and I want to tell you about the 3things that I did to shape up the city and my community!
1,I walked my neighbors dog
2,I went around picking up garbage
3,I volunteered at the Calgary Inter-Faith Food bank
I really think that I did something great because I am only a grade 6 student.
Thank you for putting time out of your great day to read this! From Nathan
one of my 3 thing s is volunteer at a local vets office.
i felt really good even though there were lots of sick animals
i think doing these three things helped me feel better and confident about my self and helping others.
Hello fellow Calgarians
For my three things i shoveled my neighbors driveway at night so when they woke up in the morning they didn’t have to shovel before they left for work. I also helped a little girl at my church build a birdhouse to give to some seniors at my church as an early spring present. For my final thing I picked up litter on my school field when i was walking my dog one day after school.
I think that the initiative was a great idea to get Calgarians involved around the city and I think it definitely made a difference around our awesome city.
I am 12 and this is what I did for calgary
1. I picked up garbage around my neighborhood, I enjoyed the fact I was making my community a cleaner place.

picking up garbage
doing something nice for a niebhour
and donating to the breast cancer foundation
for one of my three things i volunteered at a local vets office.
My name is Jordan and i am a grade six student at Fish Creek School. The three things i did to help my community were shovelling my neighbours driveway, cleaning the field behind my house and walking to school everyday instead of polluting the air by getting a ride. I thought this initiative was a great idea!
My grade 6 students participated in this initiative. It was a powerful experience for may of them. I think it was a wonderful idea, and hope that people see there is more power in positive actions than in complaining. This initiative is about making Calgary a better place to live through your actions, it is not an opportunity to complain about what you would like to see. Be part of the change you would like to see!
Hi! I’d like to add a few more things to what I said on Feb. 7! By the way, I’m 12 and I go to Fairview Jr. High!
1. Backyard Chickens. They are easy to take care of, give fresh eggs everyday, and aren’t aggressive. Also, we want kids like me to understand where our food comes from, that our resources are limited, and what life on a farm is like. This will give them more respect of our resources. They cut down on organic waste, are very popular pets, and the feces are a really great fertilizer for the garden. They will also pick off garden pests like beetles and aphids. They also trim down some kinds of weeds so you won’t have to pull them yourself! What could be better?
2. Community orchards and gardens. It helps the community grow together and share a “pick your own” experience. Usually, families don’t have time to spend together and this is a great way to be together and have fun without spending thousands of dollars on a vacation or driving across Canada. This will teach youngsters how our food grows, how to do basic plant care, and other skills. Not only might it be a place to collect homegrown veggies and meet others in your community, it’s also a valuable learning experience!
3. Volunteering opportunities. Most kids these days have nothing to do after school except hanging out with friends, playing computer games, or watching TV. There is no one to help volunteer at my Towne Hall regularly except me… It would be great if we got more hands around the neighborhood. Not only are kids usually faster, they also draw more people to volunteer, inspiring others by just helping out, sending the message:”I can care and volunteer here. If I can, anybody can!”. It helps lots of kids get more job opportunities, knowledge(Especially if one is going into a course related to helping others), and of course, a fun time! This experience will benefit all! The kids have a way to spend there time without taking to dangerous activities like drugs, a reference to kick start a first job, and a feeling of gratitude after serving. The recruiters get the job done faster and get volunteers calling in because of the kids influence. And finally, the parents and city. Now they have hard working children, who respect and care for their community. This results in more confident kids, less gangs and bullies, less youth violators, and a healthy, happy city altogether!
Thank you for letting me share my thoughts!
seems like you guys watched the movie pay it forward, but it is still a great idea
1) I want to donate at least 5 scarves to donate to charity, so that those in need will be warm and cozy during the wintertime.
2) I want to hold a fundraiser for cancer research. I will sell some of my crafts and then donate the money.
3) I want to be friendly and say “Hi” to the neighbours I see on my block so I can get to know them better.
How about a community challenge? All in a healthy competitive and positive way to spark more awareness for this great initiative and also do more collectively. Any takers for a three-pronged Discovery Ridge/Signal Hill/Springbank Hill community challenge?
Hello Mayor Nenshi and fellow Calgarians,
(they are in kindergarten remember
We have been busy building a city within our classroom and we have embraced this project in our Kindergarten class. We are encouraging our parents to visit your blog and facebook page and talk to their kids about how we can all make a difference. We just started today but some of the things that these wonderful Kindergarten students brought up were:
- use rain water instead of city water to water gardens
- make blankets for families with little children in need
- bringing food into the school to donate to the foodbank
- buying cribs for NeighbourLink
- donating used books and clothing
- make a lemonade stand and donate the money
- singing every day!
- buying a coffee for the car behind you in line at Tim Horton’s
We will post again as our ideas grow. Thank you so much, Mayor Nenshi, you are truly an inspiration!

Hi Adrianna,
Thank you for sharing three things that you would like to see! I agree it would be wonderful to have more green space, more schools and more community centres! How wonderful that would be.
Our initiative is focussed on three things that we can each do to make our city even better. We are asking citizens to think about three things that would make our city better, do them, and then encourage others to do their three things. Would love to hear more about what you will be doing to help our city be an even better city. Thanks!
